AT THE MOVIES WITH HERB BOYD

Malcolm X and Nat Turner, icons of African American history, are the subjects of two films in Sembène – The Film & Arts Festival’s 2017 Black History Month programs. The veteran historian and prolific author Dr. Herb Boyd will lead the post-film discussion for both features. Both screenings are at The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh—Homewood, 7101 Hamilton Avenue, Pgh., Pa 15208

Friday Feb. 17  @  6:00 PM – Death of a Prophet

A narrative of Malcolm X’s last 24 hours before his assassination. Featuring Morgan Freeman as Malcolm X & Yolanda King as Betty Shabazz.  Written and directed by award winning playwright Woodie King Jr. Percussion by jazz icon Max Roach.

Saturday Feb. 18 @ 1:30 PM – Birth of a Nation

The 2016 full-length feature film based on true events of Nat Turner who led the historic 1831 slave revolt in Southampton County Virginia. Written, directed and starring (as Nat Turner) Nate Parker.
